Nearly half of adults in the U.S. have high blood pressure (hypertension), and most do not know they have it. Hypertension is the third leading cause of death in the U.S. The disease can lead to other health problems, including heart attack, stroke, and heart failure.

You can reduce your risk by adding one healthy habit at a time. This May, celebrate National Blood Pressure Education Month by raising your awareness with the power of information. Learn more about managing high blood pressure here.

Know Your Numbers

Hypertension is also called the Silent Killer—many people with hypertension experience minor or no symptoms. Knowing your blood pressure numbers — and then taking action — reduces the possible risks of health issues related to high blood pressure.

Visit a health care provider regularly to determine if you have high blood pressure. The table below can also help you know the level of risk based on your results.

7 Ways to Keep Your Blood Pressure Healthy

You can start by adopting heart-healthy habits, including:

  •  Being more physically active
  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Following a heart-healthy diet, such as the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) eating plan
  • Quitting smoking
  • Managing stress
  • Getting 7-9 hours of quality sleep
  • Knowing and tracking your heart health numbers, like blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels

You can stay aware of your blood pressure with a yearly doctor’s visit. A healthy blood pressure is typically less than 120/80 mm Hg. If your numbers are high, work with your provider to learn how to lower them. Your healthcare provider may suggest regularly measuring your blood pressure with a self-monitoring device.
